  About the Artist

Marian Gaydos My background as both an English major and a classical pianist prepared me conceptually for my current role as jewelry designer. At first glance, these disciplines may not seem to have any connection with one another. However, I discovered the similarities early on in my jewelry making career.

As with writing or practicing piano, having the patience to work, rework and rework individual parts yet again-- whether it be in a piece of writing or a passage of music or a jewelry design—having the patience to keep trying out slightly different variations or simplifications is a key to creating a balanced satisfying piece. It takes time to truly see (or hear) whether all elements are in balance.

Simplicity and elegance are the qualities I admire and strive for in my designs. When creating a pendant, I take my cues from the individual character of the stone, crystal, or fossil that is the centerpiece. Color, shape, and surface texture all account for the metal and embellishment materials I choose—matching or contrasting stones, pearls, crystals and other beads. Sometimes I choose not to embellish at all. Sometimes I combine stones. Sometimes I create a matching or contrasting necklace and/or earrings.

There is a joy and inner satisfaction that comes with finishing a piece when the character of the stone is enhanced by the design. And there is a tangible pleasure when someone becomes excited about a particular piece. I am fortunate to be able to work doing something I would choose to do in my spare time if I was not already doing it.

Techniques and Materials

Marian Gaydos I utilize a variety of techniques in order to create my jewelry. They include coiling, weaving, forging, knitting, and crocheting--all different ways of working with wire--as well as polishing. I usually work with sterling silver or goldfilled wire, but I may also use argentium, 14 or 18K gold, or base metal wire as well.

My main materials include a wide variety of precious stones, natural and manmade crystals, fossils, pearls, shells, beach stones, beach glass, handmade glass and wood, as well as beads of the same composition. Pendants may be hung on precious metal chains or beaded necklaces.

My goal is always to allow the beauty of the individual centerpieces to be the unobstructed focal point of attention.
